What if my camper has a food allergy/medical condition?

You will need to list in detail any instructions regarding food allergies or medical conditions.  A medical release form is required for Sparky Swim Camp participants. This form will be sent to you with your application package.

How much money should I send with my camper?

In previous years, campers have needed extra money to make purchases at the ASU Bookstore or our camp store (where we will have camp t-shirts, caps, goggles, suits, gear bags, and more), to buy snacks at evening activities or in dormitory vending machines, or to purchase other miscellaneous items like sunscreen. We will also have a photographer taking a camp photo which campers may purchase.

Resident campers may establish a camp account to use like a debit account while they are at camp. They can bring any amount of cash or a check to give to their counselor when they check in and can then use that amount to make purchases throughout their stay without having to keep track of physical money. Any amount left at the end of their session will be returned with the camper in the form of a check from the Camp.

What is the primary focus of Sparky Swim Camp?

The focus of the camp will be on teaching the most up-to-date stroke technique, starts, turns, and drills. Classroom sessions on nutrition, injury prevention, and race preparation will be offered with appearances from USA National Team members and Olympians. In addition, while campers are meeting and making new friends, they will be introduced to team cooperation and elite swimming.

What level of ability do you have to be at to go to Sparky Swim Camp?

Sparky Swim Camp is for USA Swimming registered, competitive swimmers, ages 8-17, of all ability levels, who want to improve their strokes and starts and turns.

Do I have to be a USA Swimming registered swimmer?

Yes. If you are not currently registered with USA Swimming a form will be sent to you in your application package.

How long is each Sparky Swim Camp?

Each camp runs from Sunday afternoon through Thursday at noon.

How will out-of-town campers get to ASU?

Sparky Swim Camp will have a van to pick up campers from the airport and take them directly to the camp and dorm.

How many hours a day are the kids in the water?

The kids are in the water about an hour and a half in the morning working on drills and strokes and another hour and a half in the afternoon. Water time is closely monitored by coaches and is technique (not yardage) focused.

How many kids stay in the dorms?

Only resident campers will be staying in the dorms. This year, we are planning on having about 30 resident campers per camp. There will be 24-hour supervision of the resident campers and male and female campers will not be in the same wings.

What are the night time/off time activities for kids that stay in the dorms?

After lunch each day, all resident campers will have a rest time in dorms from approximately 12:30-1:45pm. There really is no off-time for day campers. Off-time activities during the rest of the day will vary from team-building exercises, speakers, videotape analysis, and stroke instruction. Night time activities for resident campers will include a trip to a local water park as well as bowling at the student center (Memorial Union). Other activities planned by the resident campers' counselors may include skits or a trip to get ice cream.
NOTE: Parents will receive a daily itinerary of scheduled events at registration but you can also view our camp itinerary by clicking the "Camp Itinerary" link on the left side of our homepage.
